Haiku on Waiting for a Train to Pass
Eternal waiting
Train passing, traffic standing

So I'm going to try for one haiku a day (generally) for the month of October. Feel free to add one on the same theme!

Haikus for Breakups
A friend of mine had an unfortunate experience with someone from eharmony. In fact, a few of my friends are experiencing moderate break-ups after their summer flings. I thought people got together in the fall to hole up with companionship for the winter??? Anyway, I decided that we should write haikus about it. Here's one that I wrote:

The "Bat Crisis" of Summer 2010
Yesterday I was hanging out in my living room when I noticed some odd movement out of the corner of my eye - it was a bat in the house! After screaming and hitting the floor, I immediately called my landlord who was heading back to town from a day of drinking on the river. He said, "I don't like it, but I'll help you get it out." Then I called my friend K* who apparently has trapped several bats and released them, and asked her for some tips. So, I tried to solider up and I trapped the bat in one room with an open door to outside. Then I threw something at the bat until it flew around and I *thought* that it flew out the door and I felt all good about how independent I was.
Well, the "bat crisis" ended up being more complicated, of course. I thought I'd gotten the bat out but no dice - it was flying around again and I swear, bigger than ever about 20 minutes later. So at 10:30 p.m. my landlord and his girlfriend and their friend with an enormous beard came upstairs with several tools of the broom closet variety. However, after much pondering, we used the trap in a cup technique; slide off the wall with some beer cardboard. Bearded friend did all the dirty work, with girlfriend wearing a beekeeper hat, and my landlord just laughing like a goofball. Good times.

I've felt too busy to cook lately so I've been eating quick meals of yogurt or scrambled eggs or soup from a can. I've been working a lot of hours and traveling, and actually staying out late at a few parties. My work-life balance has shifted slightly less heavily towards "work," which I guess is a good thing. Maybe it's spring, but I'm feeling a need for creative energy/expression again. I found out about a local metalsmithing course, while visiting a local bakery, which was all just wonderfully being in the right place at the right time.

Crockpot Venture #1: Not a Failure
So I made my first crock pot entree today. I kind of tweaked out, to be honest. Note to self: do not attempt to cook poultry in the morning; it's a bit of a strain.
I had assembled the vegetarian ingredients last night in the crock, but started trying to research browning the meat and came across too many articles about salmonella and temperature of chicken etc etc. So I decided to brown the meat this morning, but then tweaked out about putting it in the cold liquid. So, I ended up putting it in the oven at 350 and baking it while the crock pot heated up, which was a pretty good solution on the temperature issue but then ended up cooking the ginormous chicken breast all the way through. So I put it cooked in the soup crockpot and hoped for the best. But I worried all day that the chicken was going to be the consistency of a beach ball. But, when I came home, the house smelled amazing (thanks cumin, and thanks to Rotelle chili flavored tomatoes) and the chicken was good. A little dry, but definitely not "beach ball" in texture. And the house didn't burn down.
Isn't the whole point of crock pot cooking that it's not neurotic? I'll have to remember that next time.

Creative Energy Comes in Delicious Packages
I've turned my creative juices onto cooking lately, and this cooking has some spice to it! A lot of these ideas I've gotten from Mark Bittman's cookbook, "How to Cook Everything." Or, perhaps I found a recipe somewhere else, and then tweaked it after reading the cookbook. My latest endeavors:
1) homemade chili paste
2) "busy-man's chai"
3) vegetarian and pork dumplings
4) stuffed zucchini and stuffed onions
Each of these has been an experiment, and in each I've learned a little something, and thought of how I could do it better next time. Here are the corresponding thoughts and lessons:
1) Get to know more about different types of chilis. In this round, I used dried Ancho chiles. They were supposed to be milder, and they were. But also, the paste had a bit of a bitter flavor, which I don't how how to fix. I used it mixed in with a quinoa filling for #4, but perhaps paired with a meat it would have a different result.
2) I definitely need to try this again. Since I don't have a microwave, I had to heat milk in a little container on the stove, which is tricky because you can't heat it too fast or too much. I dipped a lipton tea bag in, and it barely steeped at all. I had cardamom and cinnamon, but not cayenne or clove, but then sprinkled in ginger and a little black pepper. I'd say it less resembles chai then just a weird drink. But, it's a work in progress and this has potential to be amazing.
3) First time, I steamed these in a bamboo steamer over a wok - proper AND delicious. The second time, I boiled them and they were a pretty disgusting texture. Next time, I'll pan fry them first, then steam them to finish. Both low tech AND delicious, I predict.
4) These were just good. I don't know if I'd make the onions again, but maybe with a different filling. Maybe more like a ground beef or ground lamb type thing, with cheese and tomatoes? I don't know - but I am INTO the technique.

Sundays: Explore and Dream Days
So Sundays are my new exploration days. Last weekend I went to the botanical gardens and walked around the outdoor and indoor gardens. It was like night and day - the outdoors were frozen and quiet with filtered light reflecting from the sky and the frozen lake. The inside garden was tropical and humid with little birds flying around. It was nice to be able to breathe humid air again, even for an hour or two.
This weekend, I went to see a neat Automata exhibit at a local museum. On Sundays, there are free concerts and today was a piano and cello duo - so delightful. The acoustics were marvelous and the museum had some beautiful French glasswork from the Arts & Crafts period, and also some great Thai and Hindi Buddhism pieces, as well as the Automata (one shown left). The music echoed through the gallery and made it a fun wintery experience.
I also went looking at some Asian grocery stories. I was actually looking for some homemade fortune cookies for Chinese New Year next weekend. I didn't find those, but a few of the stores were interesting/cheap and had quite a variety of obscure ethnic products in case there was something unique one needed. There was a lot of frozen fish, which I didn't know quite what to make of, and not as many Chinese candies as I hoped.

Tide Has Turned: 2010
I went to a "snow ball" party last weekend. The theme was "Edward Gorey" and I dressed up with a fun hat. There was a guy there with a huge fake mustache, who kind of looked like Hugh Jackman in "The Prestige." There were also some cool girls there in funny flapper type hats/outfits. At midnight, we walked out on the frozen lake and lit off fireworks, which was probably my favorite moment in Madison to date. Of course, everyone picked up all the fireworks and beer cans right after because it's Madison and everyone is all about recycling.
